Blueprint for Prosperity:
Engineering a Sustainable Blue Economy

Background

Kenya’s Blue Economy has emerged as a strategic frontier for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and job creation. Covering oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and associated resources, the Blue Economy is projected to significantly contribute to Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The country’s vast maritime and freshwater resources offer immense opportunities in shipping, port development, fisheries, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, coastal tourism, and offshore renewable energy. However, to fully unlock this potential, strategic investments in engineering, technology, and sustainable infrastructure are essential. Engineers play a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the infrastructure and technologies that enable the Blue Economy to thrive. From resilient ports and shipyards to coastal protection systems, waste management, and digital marine surveillance, the profession is at the heart of innovation, sustainability, and resilience in the sector. The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) proposes the Annual Engineering Partnerships Convention 2026 with the theme: “Harnessing the Blue Economy for Sustainable Development” with the following sub-themes:
